New reportage for El País and Courrier International: In Mauritania, a Sufi oasis offers resistance to the rise of Salafism

May 07, 2026

In the 1970s, a Sufi community settled in the heart of the Mauritanian desert.

The spirituality that animates the community, which advocates equality between men and women, draws criticism and exclusion in a country where Salafism is gaining increasing influence over the religion, I wrote for El País.

The French version of this story was recently published by Paris-based Courrier International. All pictures you can see above are taken by me.
